We hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation and enjoyed some time away from school. Today we had some special guests with us, The Pinball Wizards. We learned all about force and motion! We talked about pulling, pushing, force, friction, fast, slow and so many great science concepts. Here's some pictures of what we did! They began by introducing themselves and showed us how to build a PINBOX 3000. Everyone then got to spend some time playing with one of the pinboxes. Then we did an experiment. We used 4 different marbles and rolled them through a tube and down a track and recorded which one went the furthest. For the final project of the day everyone was split into four groups and each group had to strategically place blocks on a ramp to make the ball go as slowly as possible down the ramp. It was very interesting to see all of the different strategies. You will find a Parent/Teacher Conference sign-up sheet in this weeks Friday Folder. Mrs. Antonioli is hoping to get them all done ASAP, for obvious reasons, but Mrs. Walcott has a little more time and flexibility. The sooner you send them back the sooner we can let you know what time your conference is. We always look forward to sitting down and sharing all the hard work your child has been doing at school. .

Thank you to Mrs. Antonioli's amazing room parents for pulling off a fantastic surprise baby shower today! The kids had a great time! We hope everyone has a great vacation! We will see your children back at Orchard on Wednesday, March 8!
This week we learned three new sounds. They are all digraphs which are two letters that come together to make a new sound. Our new digraphs are 'th', 'sh' and 'ch'. Our new reading strategy this week is Stretchy the Snake. We talked about how you can slowly stretch out the sounds in a word and then put them together and say the whole word. In math we have been working with story problem, 10 frames, number bonds and number sentences. I give them a story problem (there were 4 cows eating grass in the field, 3 more came to join them. How many cows are eating grass in the field?), we build it with cubes on the 10 frame and then we make number bonds and number sentences to match.
We started our morning with a presentation by Jason Chin and he showed us what went into writing his new book, Grand Canyon. We did some writing with our new pencils that we got as part of I Love to Read and Write Week! We turned all the lights off and read using our flashlights! Mrs. Walcott's class read the stories they wrote with their Book Buddies to the class! Jason Chin met again with just the Kindergarteners and took us through the process of writing a book and did some amazing sketches with us! Have a great weekend!
We had a very busy day! As part of our I Love to Read and Write Week we began the morning with a guest reader in the classroom. Mrs. Bahrenburg came to Mrs. Walcott's room and Mrs. Vachereau came to Mrs. Antonioli's room. Mrs. Walcott's class had Farm to School where we made a yummy cabbage salad. The recipe will be in the Core this week. And this afternoon we went to see Frog and Toad at the Flynn. It was a great show! We had to use a lot of patience at the end because we were the LAST class dismissed from the theater.
This morning we worked on some writing and read to our stuffed animals. Our writing today began with the words 'I can' or 'I see'. Everyone then sounded out and wrote what they can do or see. This afternoon in math we used 10 frames and cubes to build story problems. I would read a story problem, for example: there were 3 cows munching on grass in the field. 4 more cows came over to join them. How many cows were there in the field? and students would use their cubes to build the problem. Tomorrow morning we will NOT HAVE KEYWORDS. As part of I Love to Read and Write week every class in the school will have a guest reader, another teacher, coming in to read to them tomorrow morning.
We are also going to the Flynn tomorrow to see Frog and Toad. Be sure to ask your child tomorrow night what they liked about the show. We had a great Valentine's Day in Kindergarten! Thank you to everyone who took the time to think of their friends and teachers! Everyone felt very special. There were a lot of 'thank you's' begin said while we were opening our bags! In honor of I LOVE TO READ AND WRITE WEEK students are invited to bring a stuffy to read to at school tomorrow and on Friday they are invited to bring a flashlight to read with!
Let us know if you have any questions! We had a great morning assembly to kick off I LOVE TO READ AND WRITE WEEK next week led by our own in-house author, Mrs. Klein. Mrs. Klein read us a chapter from her new book that's not even out yet! There was also a book give away where one student from each class got to pick a new book. Congratulations to Riley and Maddox on their new books! This morning we also did some Valentine's prep. Everyone got to decorate a bag with their name on it so they're ready for Tuesday. If your child is going to distribute valentines they're welcome to bring them in on Monday if they're done. We also made Valentine wreaths. This afternoon we saw our Book Buddies and worked on finishing the illustrations in the stories they wrote the past few weeks. Mrs. Walcott's class also got to make some valentines with their buddies. Stay warm and have a great weekend!
This morning Miss Deirdre, Liam's mom, came in and taught about the writing process and the steps she goes through when making a picture book. She read us her book Outside and then shared some of her sketch books with us before helping us write a story as a class. We even got a sneak peak at her new book which comes out this spring! Here's the completed beginning, middle and end of our story! THANK YOU, Deirdre! This afternoon we used 10 frame paddles in math to build numbers. We used both the five-wise and pair-wise 10 frames to help us build. I have attached the Valentine's list below, please let me know if it doesn't work. We will also send home one more paper copy tomorrow.
We had a GREAT 100th day of school! Here's a look into our day! Everything we did this morning revolved around 100 (100 cups, 100 legos, 100 snack, 100 blocks, 100 links, etc) We had a parade around the school and ended in the gym with a dance party! Thank you to everyone that contributed to our 100th day snack. It was a hit!
